It feels like Monday came too quickly!
John and I both worked full days Friday, then packed the car and headed to Winston-Salem, NC to attend our dear friend Molly's wedding. It's about an 8 hour trip, so we actually split up the drive and spent Friday night in a small town past Knoxville (Dandridge, maybe?). On Saturday we finished up the trip and enjoyed Molly's lovely wedding and reception. It was so fun to celebrate with her -- she was absolutely beaming with happiness! Just glowing. It was great!
Sunday we made the trip back, and then had a lazy night at home. We cooked dinner, did laundry, and had John's friend Jake over to hang out. John and Jake played video games while I read more about the care and keeping of herbs -- I'm pretty obsessed! I had so much fun experimenting with herbs in our pasta for dinner (I tried to take a picture but my camera wouldn't work). I didn't grow up with an herb garden or a vegetable garden (that's next!), but I do remember helping my grandmother, Nanoo, with her garden several seasons. My "help" was mainly limited to picking weeds and watering, so learning about the life cycle, family/genus, and care of plants is all new to me. I told Nanoo that I was getting into it and that one day I hope to have a garden and also learn to can and preserve fruits and veggies, and she said that I had "farming in my blood" and that it was the "Huff coming out in me." Of course, she's a pro -- she raised 5 kids, plenty of veggies, and thousands of chickens on her farm back in the day! :) Thumbs up: Nanoo, home gardening, and the way things used to be.
We were gone last weekend for Memorial Day and then both had very busy work weeks, so it's really nice to be home again. It kind of feels like we haven't been to church in ages. June is a busy month for us! We still have to squeeze in a quick trip to Atlanta to see baseball and a trip to the beach! It's a lot of driving -- and, unfortunately, a lot of eating quick fast food meals on the road. :( Thumbs down: Modern lifestyle (on the road) with modern fast food.
We don't have a lot going on this week -- so hopefully that means I will finally get some more pictures on here!

Long Overdue
Whew, I am tired.
Everyone kept telling me how exhausting planning a wedding could be, but I didn't understand how making a few phone calls, ordering some flowers, food, and music could be so tiring! Now that we've had to deal with vendors who were misinformed, or came back with higher prices, or couldn't help us, etc., I realize that's more of an emotional weariness than physical. At the end of the day, you simply can't understand how you are so tired when all you did was make phone calls (it feels like 40!), change the program music (I finally caved to a traditional bridal march), run errands and go to appointments (about 12), check program proofs (about 7 -- resulting in 3 more phone calls and 1 more errand), and work out these crazy details.
I mean seriously, does anyone really care about the types of candles someone has at a reception? Because I don't. And apparently that makes me a really bad bride. Like, worse than a bridezilla. I think I frustrate the vendors (and also very helpful family members) by NOT having an opinion! I don't really care about what shade of beige the table overlays are. It's not that I'm not excited or don't care about the wedding itself, because I am really excited. I'm absolutely counting down these next few days. All I know is that I get to marry John, and it's going to be a beautiful service and a lovely, fun reception. With sparklers and twinkle lights and our families and music and friends and a dress I really like. Oh, and I know that something big is bound to go wrong, because it does for every wedding, but in the end it's just one more story to tell your grandchildren!
I'm really glad that my mom is so gifted in different directions than I am and I have really appreciated her help lately. I get excited about having a plan set up for how to most efficiently light the sparklers, or how to handle parking and transportation, or planning when we get to eat snacks!, or about the printed materials looking good. [I'll admit it, I'm pretty excited that the invitations, programs, matchboxes, and sign for the reception all coordinate!] To each his own. My mom gets excited about table displays and making sure she knows what all my aunts are going to wear. My mom is coordinating the reception decor, making the table arrangements (a florist was mucho expensive for that!), and making sure things fit into an overall cohesive vision. I know it's going to be gorgeous -- she has great taste. And, although this was hard for me to see at first because I couldn't see her "vision" until I started seeing the pieces come together, my mom is working really hard for the visible parts of the wedding (the flower, decor, tables, etc.) to really reflect what I would want...if I had enough taste to know what I wanted!
I've spent a lot of time with my mom lately because most of my bridesmaids are way too swamped to be involved this week, which I understand. I've been in people's weddings before when basically all I could do was show up! In this week before the wedding, I've got 1 bridesmaid working all the time in SC, 1 doing the same thing in TN, 1 on a long overdue beach vacation, 1 in England, 1 in Peru, and 1 packing to move to Singapore. It's a busy busy group of girls, but they still call and check up on how things are progressing! They are all so sweet and so important to me, and I can't wait to see them next Friday!
I'm glad I was able to have this time with my mom, but I'm a little worried about how she's going to take it when I move away and don't 'belong' to her anymore (if that's the right way to put it). It could be a tough transition for both of us. I always grew up a 'Daddy's girl,' but my relationship with my mother has become closer with age.
I'm really psyched that John will be in town this weekend! We have to get him a wedding band, meet with the photographer, go to counseling, load his car with the last of my stuff to move up to TN, and buy sparklers. And we have to go to the courthouse on Monday to get a WEDDING LICENSE! Yay!
Please pray that our housing situation will work out soon. We have submitted a security deposit and application for an apartment, but we haven't heard yet whether that's all worked out. I'm glad that John made honeymoon plans for the NC mountains, because that will be both relaxing and convenient for moving (timing/location wise) since it's already en route to TN.
We're getting there! Pray for wisdom and calm for John and I and for our families! :)

Tuesday Timeline List
Well, it's time for another Tuesday list.
But first of all, I apologize for being so slack at blogging lately. Let me catch you up. I wrapped up my last day at my job on Friday, 20 June, and then spent the weekend enjoying my friends John and Carrie Beth Candeto's beautiful wedding. That was a great weekend! Their wedding service was a beautiful tribute to the Lord, and the reception was a great celebration! I was so glad that (my) John came into town to be my date for the wedding -- we had so much fun dancing and catching up with Furman friends!
Last week, my mom surprised me with a rather impromptu beach trip for my birthday. We took a short little jaunt down to stay in Folly Beach and also spent part of a day walking through Charleston. My mom used to take us to Folly Beach every year when we were little; she still says that she never feels like it's "summer" until she gets at least a brief beach trip.
This past weekend, my girlfriends threw me a bachelorette party and lingerie shower at The Reserve at Lake Keowee. It was great! My sister-in-law Sara treated us to dinner at the Clubhouse and also arranged for us to stay in a beautiful cottage. We spent most of Saturday at the pool, and then my friends put together a beautiful shower and really fun night.
John also came into town this weekend, and so did my brother Justin and sister-in-law Marie and their kids. John spent time hanging out with my family and watching toddlers while I was enjoying a luxurious stay at The Reserve! He's so great. The reason everyone was in town this weekend was for a cookout shower that my grandmother threw for John and I on Sunday. The food was delicious and it was great to see my extended family on my Mom's side.
It really does feel like summer to me now. I can't believe that the summer was almost halfway over before I realized it had started! I guess that's what happens when you're used to working an office job - there's not much to distinguish the summer from any other season. Now it feels like summer: lots of weddings and parties, a beach trip, fun weekends, a calmer pace than usual during the week, Mom not working, and even a little sleeping in. Most of all, it feels like summer because I'm getting ready to move. All my summers through college involved moving, whether it was just from school to home back to school, or for summer stints in DC and Florida. Summer always feels so transitory, and this one even more so, since I know so much will be changing soon. My name, my home, my job, my state, everything!
In light of how quickly things are approaching, I figured I'd just list the remaining weekends between now and the wedding as my Tuesday "list". I know it's cheating, but this was a pretty long entry anyways.
4 July - I'm going to visit John in TN this weekend, and we're going to Nashville's big Fourth celebration on the river!
12 July - After going to a friend's birthday cookout on Friday night in SC, I will leave early Saturday for a midday cookout in TN. Hopefully by this time we will have an apartment that we can start stashing stuff in or some really good leads to follow up on. This will be my last weekend in TN as a visitor -- the next time I'm there will be to move there indefinitely.
19 July - John is coming to SC this weekend. We'll have more premarital counseling sessions and work on wedding details. I'm hoping we can go to Sliding Rock too. (We also have to get a headcount to the caterer.)
26 July - John is coming to SC this weekend too. We'll wrap up our counseling and he'll hopefully drive a Uhaul truck back home full of furniture for us to use!
2 August - We get married!
I haven't really started to think about the weekends after that...I'm sure they'll be busy too as John and I adjust to school, work, marriage, and new environs!

Angelic (-looking) children and other things
We made a LOT of wedding planning progress over the weekend. My cousin Lynsey and I visited the Wedding Festival in Greenville on Thursday evening -- we sampled the food, picked up some coupons and ideas, talked to our florist, and booked a PHOTOGRAPHER (Michael Lamb Photography - his updated website is coming soon). We also saw a hideous "fashion" show complete with obnoxious local emcee's. On Friday evening, my dad and I went to hear a possible BAND for the reception. They were playing locally at the Poinsett Club - my parents had heard them before. That was fun! On Saturday I decided to book the band, so we're all set. We're just working on a set list for them, and a song list for songs that they will download to play during their breaks. Any suggestions??
Saturday I went over to my grandmother's house and helped her address the wedding INVITATIONS. Many of those are now ready to be sent out this week. I still have a few straggling address that I need, and my mom and I are still having some minor squabbles about the guest list. She thinks that the percentage of attendees for a summer wedding tends to be low, so she wants to over-invite on that probability. I'm more conservative about projections because I'm the one that has to stick to a budget!!
On Sunday I worked some more on invitations, and then headed to an outlet in Gaffney to purchase a FLOWER GIRL DRESS. Oh my goodness, sooooo cute. My mom had found little ivory smocked outfits at an outlet for my two nephews to wear, and this store in Gaffney had the corresponding ivory little girl dress. I am SO excited about seeing my adorable niece in her pretty dr
ess, and my rambunctious nephews looking like little princes (for about 3 minutes, until they go rolling in the dirt somewhere and turn their ivory outfits brown!!). Lots more to do, but it's nice to check off a few things!!

Oh, the Start of Another Week
Finally starting to feel a lot better. Still trying to shake a lingering croupy cough though. Had a very quiet weekend visiting with friends who were in town for FU's graduation, resting, recovering, and ordering wedding invitations. Unfortunately now my mom is sick!
The invites are ordered (although they are still in the "proofing" process). That means that we have to get married on August 2nd at 6:30 PM or I will have wasted some moola! I couldn't get the design/motif I wanted, so, as usual, I had to settle on an alternative or "option B." The invitations are still very beautiful. I guess I shouldn't have had such a clear picture in my mind for what I wanted!
I do know it will still be very nice though -- John keeps reminding me of that when I don't get what I want for all these stupid, trivial decisions. At the end, we'll still be married -- and the groom is definitely FIRST CHOICE! :)
I'm relieved to see the long list of things we "don't have" secured for the wedding finally (slowly!) getting checked off.
Please pray for me because I need to make some tough financial/logistical decisions soon. Funny how much it can hang over you when you know you have a decision to make! I've been in a bit of a 'blue-funk' today -- a little more than the typical Monday!
Might be a good night to go for a run and eat some ice cream, eh? :) I'll try to come up with a list tomorrow.

Well, it's definitely starting to feel very real now...
I have 82 days until I throw what my sister-in-law Sara calls "the biggest celebration of your life," start our marriage (wow!), take a cool trip, move to another state, settle into new digs, and find a new job in a city where I know almost no one. Whew - that's a lot of changes!
The countdown is on!
I went to see John this weekend in Tennessee, and we had a great time goofing off and hanging out. We didn't take care of many wedding details though, and it kind of hit me on the 5.5 hour drive home alone just how much is left to do! It was great to not think about much wedding stuff for the weekend though. I got there very early Friday so we could hang out for a while. Then I took a nap, went to see a movie, AND had my nails done while he went in to work Friday afternoon, so that was relaxing! On Saturday John drove me around Nashville to show me where his pharmacy school is located, and we looked around for apartments in that area. Great to see the school, slightly daunting to see the apartment prices! I'm glad John's taking care of finding us our new place so that I don't have to worry about that. We hung out with his family and some of our friends on Saturday night at the neighborhood sports bar/restaurant where his sister works.
Now it's back to the real world and the work grind...I've got a lot to get done this week!

Another boring wedding update - Sorry!
We got a preacher!
Wooo-hooo!
I'm excited because A) I think Grant will do an awesome job and he and his wife like to walk couples through the pre-marital counseling together, which will be cool, and B) I don't have to change the wedding date and therefore lose my deposit at the reception venue. So as far as other things go...
Date - Set.
Time - TBD.
Reception location - Set.

Wooo-hooo!
I'm excited because A) I think Grant will do an awesome job and he and his wife like to walk couples through the pre-marital counseling together, which will be cool, and B) I don't have to change the wedding date and therefore lose my deposit at the reception venue. So as far as other things go...
Date - Set.
Time - TBD.
Reception location - Set.
Preacher - Set. Yay!
Church - Apparently our original application to use the church WAS approved, but now they need to revisit it because of the pastor change.Bridal party - I've set my list, but I haven't asked everyone yet.
Attire - Purchased my dress! Now I need to work on bridesmaids dresses.
Guest list - STILL a terrible and awful thing.
Wedding website - Not sure if we're going to have one or not. If John or I don't set one up fairly soon then it's highly unlikely.
Save the dates - We won't have any. One less thing to think about. We've told most family and out of town guests the date already, and I've plastered it on my Facebook page!
Accomodations - Need to work on blocking hotel rooms.

Disclaimer: If you are a boy, this will completely bore you. And possibly some girls too. Heck, sometimes it even bores me!
Ooops!
Our preacher found out that the surgery he was planning to have in July is scheduled for 29 July...which is only a few days before our wedding on 2 August. As he is an older gentleman and will potentially require some extended recovery time, he's bowing out of the wedding. I'm disappointed because he was my pastor at the church I attended during my middle school / early high school years, so he was very fundamental in shaping my ideas -- and he answered so many of my endless questions during those years! He was sort of a grandfather figure to me at that time. Many people have also told me that he is a great counselor, so I was looking forward to John and I working with him.
Which means we no longer have a preacher... kind of an important element if you ask me!
So, it's time to ask a few more possibilities. It's a good thing that my family has spent significant time in several different PCA churches and therefore know -- and LIKE -- quite a few PCA pastors, because the wedding pastor has to be in that denomination for us to use the church that we want for our wedding (the church where I was born and baptized and attended until middle school). I think it would be cool for my uncle to do the service, but unfortunately he's ordained in a different denomination.
In other wedding news (not that anyone cares, but it makes me feel like something has been accomplished!):
Date - Got it.
Time - Don't got it. Evening, but not sure of the time yet.
Venues - Reception location booked. In the middle of the application process to use the church, but it looks promising (www.secondpca.org).
Caterer - Comes with the location.
Preacher - None. Nada.
Cake - I've booked a cake lady and will pick up samples of the cake flavors next week. I also have a pre-scheduled consultation with another cake lady on Monday evening, but I may cancel it.
Photos - Our first choice photographer is unavailable. Time to start emailing a few others that friends have recommended.
Reception decor - My mom and I purchased some very cool (very cheap!) mosaic glass type candle globes to use on the tables. I think playing with light will be neat since it's a rather dark venue (low ceiling, exposed brick walls). I need to look into some more interesting table linens than just the standard black or white.
Bridal party - Still no final decision. Wavering over some tough choices because I have quite a few girlfriends that I love and admire and want involved, but it needs to be a small wedding party (financially and due to the small size of our wedding overall).
Attire - My mom and I did some in-town dress-hunting last night. Looks like we may head to Atlanta this weekend and make a final decision on my dress. Then I'll move on to bridesmaid dresses (Psssst: I'm considering some from Target!)

I've emailed one professional band and plan to email another today. Waiting to hear prices...we will likely end up with a DJ instead, but it doesn't hurt to do some research first!

Tuesday's "List"
Since I couldn't think of a good list topic for today's post, I decided to instead tell y'all -- like Donna D in her blog post today -- that wedding guest lists are AWFUL.

It's so painful to decide who does or does not make "the List" -- especially with a small budget, a financial/parental limit of no more than 100 or so guests in attendance, and a huge family! This List will affect our pricing estimates (and final prices) for everything - especially food, cake, and beverages.
Just to invite family members, we're already inviting about 75 people. John's mom (who is totally on the ball!) has already sent us a listing, complete with addresses, for about 30 more people who she expects to attend the wedding -- mainly their close family friends. My parents owe me the same type listing for their close, long-standing friends that they need to invite.

So, the question is: do John and I get to invite any friends to our wedding?

It's Official!
It's Tuesday, which means time for another list! I'll try to make it a short one, since today's entry may be rather long.
Before the list, let me address the recent big news in my life: John and I are getting married!
He proposed last Saturday evening, before Easter. The short version of the story is that we went to dinner at a swanky restaurant downtown, and then he proposed at Furman. Like many Furmanites, most of our first dates involved long talks while walking around the lake, so it was neat to head back to our old stomping grounds.
The extra part of the story is that earlier in the day, when we were practicing a little bit of softball, I caught a fly ball....with my mouth. So the evening that the whole engagement/proposal went down, I had a hugely swollen lip, some bruising on my chin, and a very sore jaw despite spending much of the afternoon with an icepack to my face. John told me it looked like I had Botox - on only one side. I wasn't in the best mood when the date started, but I sure looked funny!
The swelling went down very dramatically during dinner - we were actually both shocked at how fast it went down, considering that the ice earlier had not helped at all! I found out later that my mom called her sisters after John and I left for dinner (she had a hunch), so they were all praying for my lip to heal quickly. I believe in the power of prayer, so I just think that's a neat part of the story. Besides, who else gets a softball in the face and a diamond ring in the same day from the same guy? Or a proposal with a busted lip?
We're trying to plan a wedding this summer. Yes, as in 'summer 2008.' Yes, as in 'we're completely flippin' crazy.' If we can't work out an available date/venue for this summer, the wedding will have to wait until Christmas, because he will have no good breaks before that in his pharmacy school program.
I promise this will not become a completely wedding-obsessed blog - but if we're only engaged for like 4 months, you'll have to forgive me if that's most of what I think about for the next few months! In honor of that, 2 goofy lists:
What We Need
1. A date
2. A place for the ceremony (since my church meets in a high school)
3. A place for the reception
4. A marriage license
5. Food
6. Music
7. Drinks (at this rate, lots of them!)
8. Just about everything else...
What We've Got
1. A bride
2. A groom
3. Rings (John already has my wedding band!)
4. Strong likelihood of oppressive South Carolina mid-summer heat
5. Yep, that's about it.
